Prohibited Goods on importation in Zimbabwe

If you are a traveller or you are intending to travel outside Zimbabwe, its best to understand the goods that are prohibited. This article seeks to enlighten people who do not understand what prohibited goods are.

Prohibited goods in Zimbabwe are those goods that are totally forbidden from being imported. In other words, these goods are illegal to import at all. They are governed in terms of Section 47 of the Customs and Excise Act 23:02. For those people who want to enter the world of importing or to be brokers in the forwarding business, there is need for understanding about these prohibited goods.

The reason for doing this is that the government is simply trying to protect the general public, the environment as well maintain certain standards.

The prohibited goods are as follows:

  • Pornographic materials – explicit material of any kind is strictly prohibited
  • Flick knives/lockable blades –
  • Skin lightening creams containing hydroquinone and mercury
  • Base, counterfeit or forged coins or currency – basically this is fake money that imitates real money.
  • Prison-made and penitentiary-made goods
  • Spirituous beverages which contain preparations, extracts, essences or chemical products which are noxious or injurious
  • Any goods which are indecent, obscene or objectionable
  • Any goods which might tend to deprave the morals of the inhabitants, or any class of the inhabitants, of Zimbabwe
  • Any goods the importation of which is prohibited by or under the authority of any enactment

For any person who imports such goods, the Act states that the goods shall be seized and forfeited and the person found guilty of such shall be liable to—

  1. A fine not exceeding level twelve or three times the duty-paid value of the goods concerned, whichever is the greater; or
  2. Imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years; or to both such fine and such imprisonment.

However, The Minister of Finance may authorize the importation of any goods described in subsection

  • For the purpose of study,
  • Scientific investigation or
  • Use as evidence in any proceedings.
