Did you know that duty for sanitary wear for women is free?
Statutory instrument number 264 of 2018 states that a suspension of duty shall be effected on sanitary wear, for a period of twelve months (from 1st December, 2018 to 30th November, 2019). This means that no duty will be charged.
In addition, the Import Value Added Tax (VAT) for these goods is exempt meaning it is also not charged. Statutory instrument number 265 of 2018 states that with effect from the December 1, 2018 VAT shall be exempt following its inclusion in the First Schedule to the Value Added Tax (General) Regulations, 2003, published in Statutory Instrument 273 of 2003. Value Added Tax (VAT) is an indirect tax on consumption, charged on the supply of taxable goods and services. VAT on importation is an import tax that is charged on goods at importation.
Sanitary wear for women includes the following products:
- Sanitary towels (pads)
- Tampoons
The government scrapped both duty and VAT on sanitary wear to promote good health in women.
The suspension was granted on sanitary wear with the following tariff codes:
- 9619.00.10 (Tampoons)
- 9619.00.40 (Sanitary towels)
- 9619.00.90 (Other sanitary wear)
